Love Island star Dr Alex George has shared an update after revealing he was hospitalised and finding himself ‘hardly’ able to swallow.

The TV star, 33, who first rose to fame in 2018 on the fourth series of the ITV dating show, shared an update on social media with a snap of himself on a hospital bed after being rushed to A&E on Tuesday, and has since shared an update saying he’s returned.

Dr Alex wrote today: ‘Spirit feels a bit broken writing this but sadly I had to come back to A&E this morning, throat was swelling up and getting worse.

‘Breathing is ok but thats always the big worry. Really want to be positive but I haven’t slept in a week, hardly eaten with pain and fevers.

‘I know there are so many worse off than me and I am doing my best to be grateful and positive but yeh, can’t always be I guess.’

He concluded: ‘The doctors and nurses have been so kind and caring, thank you. Just got to roll with punches now and I will be better soon.

‘Thank you so much for the love and support, Alex x.’

The mental health ambassador had previously said this week, announcing he had been admitted to hospital: ‘So Easter didn’t go so well. I was hoping to do a March photo dump today but here we are. Last few days I have had tonsillitis with fevers, but yesterday the swelling around my tonsil went crazy and the pain was very bad.

‘I was hoping it wouldn’t get worse but at midnight last night, it was too much and could hardly swallow so I went to St Thomas A&E.’

He went on: ‘Kind of weird for me coming back to St Thomas Hospital, as a few years ago I nearly died of sepsis. If it were not for the incredible care of the doctors and nurses I wouldn’t be here.

‘There is a deep humbling that happens when you feel so unwell that you need to ask someone, “please can you help me?”. In asking that question you are submitting yourself and allowing others to intervene and help you, when you can’t help yourself further.

‘I had this same feeling, probably to a greater extent, when I had sepsis. A realization of, what would I do if you weren’t here to help me right now? Like really, what would I do?’

Dr Alex went on to thank the team in A&E who looked after him at St Thomas, before he was transferred to Guys Hospital.

He continued: ‘I had medications and a procedure overnight, and felt some relief. I have had another procedure this morning and feel on the mend. I cannot emphasize, reiterate, or say this enough, I am so grateful to everyone that has looked after me.’

‘I’m lying in the hospital bed right now, feeling slightly high from the steroids, but really thinking how much I value my health, being able to move and exercise, being able to feel well. Never take it for granted! No day is promised, lets live as much as we can,’ he added.

‘All going well, I hope to be reunited with Rolo Polo later this evening or tomorrow, who has also been poorly. What a pair! Thanks for all the kind messages, I appreciate you SO much.’

Dr Alex’s post was flooded with supportive messages from fans and friends alike, with podcast host Elizabeth Day writing: ‘Oh Alex! You poor thing. Glad things are getting better take very good care of yourself!’

The Naked Education star has been open with sharing health updates on social media over the last few years, as well as raising awareness about eating disorders.

Dr Alex, who serves as the UK Youth Mental Health Ambassador within the Department for Education, has spent the past year revamping his life including becoming sober and giving up alcohol.

He still works as an NHS doctor, while also making regular TV appearances.
